Fulton County to vote on $900M hospital to ease Grady's trauma burden

Fulton County officials will decide this week on plans for a new $900 million hospital in Union City. The proposal aims to reduce strain on Grady Memorial Hospital, currently Atlanta's sole level 1 trauma centre. A vote is scheduled for Wednesday's Board of Commissioners meeting.

The project would split funding equally between three parties. Fulton County, the Fulton DeKalb Hospital Authority, and Grady Health System would each provide $300 million. If approved, the facility would help ease demand on Grady, which has been the only level 1 trauma centre since Atlanta Medical Center closed.

Details about the hospital's size, including bed capacity, remain unclear. Officials have also not confirmed whether the new site will operate as a level 1 trauma centre. The decision rests with the county commissioners during their upcoming session.

The outcome of Wednesday's vote will determine whether construction moves forward. If built, the hospital would mark a major investment in local healthcare. It would also address long-standing pressure on Grady's emergency and trauma services.
