Future of Historic Rigi Kaltbad Church Hangs in Balance
The Reformed Church of Lucerne is set to decide the fate of the historic Rigi Kaltbad mountain church. The church, built in 1963, is underused and in need of renovation. The Great Church Council will vote on December 1, with a potential sale determining the future of this architecturally significant structure.
The Rigi Südseite sub-congregation has struggled to increase usage of the church in recent years. Despite efforts, the church remains underused, leading the Reformed Church of Lucerne to consider selling it. If sold, religious services would still be possible, and the church congregation would retain a right of first refusal. The proceeds would go towards maintaining other churches in the region.
The proposed buyer, the Rigi School, plans to repurpose the church as an educational, cultural, and community hub. The school would use the church for 265 days a year, with cultural events taking place on the remaining days. This would not only preserve the church's architectural significance but also provide a new community space for the region.
The sale of the Rigi Kaltbad mountain church, if approved on December 1, would determine its future. While religious services would still be possible, the church would be repurposed as a community hub, benefiting both the Rigi School and the local community. The Reformed Church of Lucerne hopes this decision will ensure the preservation of the church for generations to come.
