Future of Wuppertal Police Premises Uncertain Amid Renovation Needs

The future of the police premises at Müngstener Straße in Wuppertal remains uncertain. The property, home to crucial deployment forces, is in dire need of renovation due to persistent issues like water damage and mold. The police currently pay around 4 million euros in rent annually, with projected cold rent costs reaching 30 million euros post-renovation.

The responsible authority for the final negotiations is unclear, but discussions likely involve the Police Directorate or local government authorities. All parties, excluding the Wuppertal realtor since mid-May, are coordinating final details. The opposition suspects the finance minister's reliance on inflated rents to address his economic woes.

Interior Minister Herbert Reul has secured around 1.1 billion euros for police building investments, but funds won't flow until 2030. Reul is unwilling to relinquish the area but also refuses to be overcharged for renovations. Despite temporary fixes, the police haven't seen significant improvements. The property houses vital units like the diving team, dog handlers, and the ready police, as well as the weapons administration.

The vast police site in Wuppertal, owned by the State Construction Authority, is crumbling. The police president has received cancellation notices for some apartments, refusing to pay increased rent. The ultimate fate of the Müngstener Straße premises remains to be seen, with negotiations ongoing and the need for urgent renovation clear.
