G7 tightens sanctions on Russia while Moscow slams Japan as US ‘vassal’
The G7 nations have stepped up their stance against Russia, with a new focus on countries aiding Moscow financially and a call for Japan to halt Russian LNG imports. Meanwhile, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu has labelled Japan as a mere vassal of the United States.
In a significant move, the G7 has decided to target nations that financially back Russia, aiming to strengthen global sanctions. This decision comes as the G7 also plans to intensify pressure on Russia over its ongoing military operation in Ukraine.
The United States has publicly urged Japan to end the import of Russian LNG, a stance announced during a meeting between US and Japanese ministers in November 2025. This move is seen as an effort to bolster the international response to Russia's actions.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu has hit back at Japan, asserting that its relationship with the US is unequal and not one of true allies. Shoigu went as far as to describe Japan as at best a vassal state of the United States.
The G7's new strategy seeks to squeeze Russia's financial support and increase international pressure. Meanwhile, Russia's top security official has publicly criticised Japan's alliance with the US, further straining diplomatic relations.
