Georgian MP Boycotts Euronest Session Over 'Hostile' EU Rhetoric

Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the European Integration Committee in the Georgian Parliament, has raised serious concerns about the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly (PA) in an open letter. The Georgian parliamentary delegation chose to boycott the 12th Ordinary Session in Yerevan due to these issues.

Makhashvili criticized 'hostile rhetoric' from certain MEPs towards Georgia, stating it contradicts the Euronest PA's principles of partnership and mutual respect. He noted MEPs participating in protest rallies outside the Georgian Parliament, deeming it an overstep of parliamentary diplomacy.

He argued that MEPs' statements and social media activity have fueled unrest, radicalization, and violence in Georgia. Makhashvili claimed MEPs have issued distorted statements supporting political figures facing criminal charges, disregarding factual evidence and the democratic will of the Georgian electorate.

Makhashvili also pointed to limited participation of partner countries in the Euronest PA as a warning sign, reflecting deeper issues within the Assembly's current approach. He called on the Euronest leadership to re-evaluate its direction and recommit to foundational principles to remain a credible platform for Eastern Partnership cooperation.

Makhashvili's concerns highlight a growing divide between the Euronest PA's stated principles and its actions towards Georgia. The Georgian delegation's boycott signals a serious rift, and the Euronest leadership must address these issues to restore trust and credibility.
