Georgia's PM Meets Belarus, Chinese Ambassadors to Boost Economic Ties

Following the Georgian Dream's electoral victory, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze held meetings with the Belarusian and Chinese ambassadors, focusing on economic cooperation. This comes amidst Belarusian President Aliaksandr Lukashenka's neutral stance on Abkhazia and South Ossetia, despite his political alignment with Russia.

On 13 October, Kobakhidze met with Belarusian Ambassador Mikalai Rahashchuk and Chinese Ambassador Zhou Qian within hours of each other. This was the fifth meeting between Kobakhidze and the Chinese ambassador in a year, underscoring the growing economic ties between Georgia and China. During the meeting with the Belarusian ambassador, Kobakhidze expressed gratitude for Belarus' support of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Lukashenka, while maintaining a neutral stance on the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, has not recognized their independence. However, his visit to Abkhazia in 2022 drew criticism from Tbilisi. Despite this, Lukashenka has praised the 'traditions of friendship and mutual respect' between Belarus and Georgia.

The meetings between Kobakhidze and the ambassadors reflect Georgia's commitment to strengthening economic ties with its neighbours. Meanwhile, Lukashenka's neutral stance on Abkhazia and South Ossetia, despite his political alignment with Russia, allows for continued diplomatic relations between Belarus and Georgia.
