Gera launches 'United Together' charter to strengthen democracy and unity

Gera is set to host a major event celebrating democracy, diversity, and community unity. On March 18, 2026, the city will launch the 'Gera – United Together' charter at Kornmarkt Town Hall. The initiative aims to strengthen integration and encourage active participation in local democratic life.

The kickoff event runs from 3:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. and features a packed programme. Mayor Kurt Dannenberg will open with a welcome address, followed by a keynote speech and themed breakout sessions. The discussions will focus on building an open, inclusive urban society.

Representatives from civil society, public administration, and engaged citizens will take part. The event seeks to turn democratic values into everyday practice through dialogue and collaboration. After the main event, attendees can join a session with local historian Frank Rüdiger at the Gera City and Regional Library.

The same evening, the Amthordurchgang Memorial will screen 'The Black Box' at Metropol Kino, with a post-film discussion. The initiative also aligns with the national Day of Democratic History, supported by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Mayor Dannenberg has stressed that democracy thrives when people work together with trust and mutual understanding.

The newly adopted 'Gera – United Together' charter serves as the foundation for these efforts. It commits the city to fostering integration and ensuring all residents have a voice in shaping their community.

The event marks the start of a long-term push to embed democratic values in Gera's daily life. By bringing together officials, activists, and residents, the city hopes to create lasting connections. Further discussions and projects will follow, building on the charter's goals of unity and participation.
