German businesses warn conscription revival could worsen labor shortages
German industry leaders have raised concerns over potential plans to reintroduce mandatory conscription. The move could create fresh challenges for businesses already struggling to find skilled workers. Experts warn that competition between the private sector and public service may intensify further.
Achim Dercks, deputy chief executive of the DIHK—the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce—has spoken out against the proposal. He fears that reinstating conscription would place additional strain on companies already facing labour shortages.
The debate over conscription highlights growing tensions between national defence needs and economic priorities. If implemented, the policy could reshape the job market, forcing businesses to compete harder for skilled employees. The government has yet to confirm any final decision on the matter.
