From Donkey Tour to Speed Dating at the Catholic Day in Würzburg - German Catholic Day 2024 Unites Faith, Culture and Bold Dialogue in Würzburg

The 104th German Catholic Day will take place in Würzburg from 13 May, featuring around 900 events. Organisers expect tens of thousands of visitors under the theme 'Take Courage, Stand Up!' with a budget of roughly ten million euros. Irme Stetter-Karp, president of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK), called it a 'Church with a future.'

The festival will open with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder in attendance. Chancellor Friedrich Merz is also scheduled to meet young participants to discuss their concerns about the future.

The programme includes live concerts, worship services, and faith-based speed-dating. More unusual offerings feature a biblical donkey walk, literature readings, theatre, and interactive art projects. Bishop Franz Jung confirmed that all nine deaneries of the Würzburg diocese will take part.

For the first time, the event will address sexualised violence and abuse of spiritual authority—though only two of the 900 events tackle the issue through artistic formats. Accessibility remains a priority, with activities designed for children, seniors, LGBTQ+ individuals, and representatives of other faiths.

High-profile guests such as astrophysicist Harald Lesch and actress Katharina Thalbach will join discussions and performances. The organisers aim to blend faith, culture, and politics in a way that engages diverse audiences.

The Catholic Day in Würzburg runs from 13 to 17 May, offering a mix of traditional and contemporary formats. With a focus on inclusion and dialogue, the event seeks to attract broad participation. Officials have emphasised its role in shaping the future of the Church through open conversation.
