German Church Urges Balance in Military Service Restructuring

The German federal government, led by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, is set to present a draft law on military service restructuring, with ongoing debates in the Bundestag as of October 2025. This move has sparked concern among many young people about the personal implications. The Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) has stepped in, advocating for a balanced approach that considers voluntary service and addresses young people's worries.

The EKD is pushing for a 'right to voluntary service' that accommodates the diverse skills and life situations of young people. It suggests that military service and peace service should be evaluated together, with an emphasis on maximum voluntariness. The church believes that those who engage voluntarily in suitable places strengthen society more sustainably than those who are compelled to do so.

Many young people have expressed their willingness to engage in voluntary services, care, or disaster protection. However, they also have concerns about the impending changes in military service. A wise law, according to the EKD, should consider both the engagement and concerns of young people regarding military service and peace service.

The German government's draft law on military service restructuring is expected to be discussed in the Bundestag soon. The EKD's advocacy for a balanced approach that considers voluntary service and addresses young people's concerns is gaining traction. As debates continue, the focus remains on creating a system that encourages sustainable engagement while respecting the views of young people.
