German Cinema Owners, Politicians Push for Youth Culture Pass Extension
The German Cinema Owners’ Association (HDF) and several political figures have voiced their support for extending the youth culture pass, which provided 18-year-olds with subsidies for cultural events such as films, concerts, and exhibitions. The pass, introduced two years ago, aimed to inspire young people to engage with culture but is set to expire soon.
Christine Berg, president of HDF, regrets the government's decision not to continue the culture pass. She believes extending it would benefit both young people and the cultural industry. Misbah Khan, deputy leader of the Green Party’s parliamentary group, also backs extending the pass, echoing the sentiment of his party. The Greens, initiated by former culture minister Claudia Roth, had previously announced an offer to extend the cultural pass for 18-year-olds in response to criticism of its discontinuation. Gregor Gysi, cultural policy spokesperson of the Left Party, has also expressed support for extending the pass.
The youth culture pass, which provided a €200 or €100 subsidy for cultural events, is set to expire. However, it has received backing from various sectors, including the German Cinema Owners’ Association and several political parties, who believe extending it would foster young people's engagement with culture and benefit the cultural industry.
