German cities race for custom license plates after new 2026 rule
Over 100 cities across Germany are pushing for custom license plates after a recent rule change. The Bundesrat approved new flexibility in March 2026, letting mid-sized towns adopt their own unique codes. Two cities in Baden-Württemberg—Bad Krozingen and Waldkirch—are among the first to seek this option. The campaign began in Hesse before gaining support from Baden-Württemberg. On March 6, 2026, the Bundesrat passed a resolution allowing more cities to create distinct license plate identifiers. If fully implemented, the change could affect around 10.5 million residents nationwide.
Bad Krozingen plans to use **BKR**, while Waldkirch has chosen **WAL** for its plates. Both cities are now urging authorities to speed up the process so the new codes can be introduced quickly. So far, no other towns in Baden-Württemberg have officially joined the initiative. The resolution specifically targets mid-sized cities that previously lacked their own codes. Local officials argue that unique identifiers would strengthen regional identity and simplify vehicle registration.
The Bundesrat's decision opens the door for more cities to adopt custom license plates in the near future. Bad Krozingen and Waldkirch are leading the push in Baden-Württemberg, with their proposed codes already selected. The next step depends on how quickly the new system is rolled out across the country.
