A German comedian has sparked controversy in Greenland after attempting to raise a U.S. flag outside a cultural centre in Nuuk. Maxi Schafroth, known for his satirical show Extra 3, staged the act on 29 January 2026, leading to an immediate backlash from locals and authorities alike.

The incident was captured on video by Greenlandic activist Orla Joelsen, who condemned the stunt as disrespectful. Authorities later filed a formal complaint against Schafroth for his actions.

The event unfolded outside a cultural centre in Nuuk, where Schafroth allegedly posed as a U.S. official. Eyewitnesses reported that he tried to hoist an American flag before staff intervened to stop him. Chaos followed, and the comedian quickly fled the scene.

Greenlandic activist Orla Joelsen shared footage of the incident online, clearly identifying Schafroth and expressing outrage. The video spread rapidly, drawing widespread criticism from locals.

NDR, the broadcaster behind Schafroth's satirical programme Extra 3, acknowledged the incident. In a statement, they expressed regret if the stunt had caused offence to Greenlanders. Despite the apology, authorities proceeded with legal action, filing a complaint against the comedian.

The incident has resulted in a formal complaint against Schafroth, with potential legal consequences. His actions, intended as satire, have instead led to anger and calls for accountability. The broadcaster's apology has done little to ease tensions in the aftermath.
