German consulate driver flees after hitting cyclist in Moscow crash
A courier on an electric bicycle was struck by a German consulate vehicle in Moscow last November. The driver, a 23-year-old consulate employee, fled the scene before police arrived. Authorities later launched an investigation into the incident.
The collision occurred when a service car bearing German Consulate General plates hit the cyclist. CCTV footage captured the moment, showing the vehicle leaving the area shortly after. The victim, a courier, sustained a concussion and a knee injury, requiring hospital treatment.
Police opened an inquiry and identified the driver as Denis Hofmann, a consulate staff member. A criminal case was initiated, but Hofmann failed to appear in court, claiming diplomatic immunity. No further legal action has been taken against the German embassy or consulate over the incident.
The case remains unresolved, with no consequences imposed on the consulate or its employee. The victim's injuries were documented, and the incident was recorded, but diplomatic protections have so far prevented legal proceedings from moving forward.
