Funds collected for jihadist militia IS: Prison sentences for four men in Hamburg - German Court Convicts Four Russians for Funding Islamic State Operations

A Hamburg court has sentenced four Russian men for raising funds to support the Islamic State (IS) militant group. The defendants were arrested between 2024 and 2025 after collecting money through online appeals and other methods. Their trial began in May 2025, following an investigation into their financial network.

The men worked together from 2022 to funnel money to IS structures. Prosecutors stated they gathered around €240,000, with €174,000 successfully transferred to the group. Donations were solicited across Germany and other European countries, aimed at sustaining IS after its military defeat in Syria and Iraq in 2017.

Some of the funds went to female IS members detained in Kurdish-run camps. Investigators found that one defendant had earlier moved €65,000 separately, raising further suspicions. The court convicted all four on charges of violating embargo regulations, membership in a criminal organisation, and supporting a foreign terrorist group. Sentences varied from four years and nine months to eight and a half years, with one defendant receiving a longer term due to prior convictions.

The case highlights ongoing efforts to disrupt IS financing networks in Europe. The convicted men will serve prison terms for their roles in the operation. Authorities have not identified any additional suspects linked to this specific funding scheme.
