Water Thief Gang Convicted - Prison for Con Artists - German Court Jails Four for Exploiting Elderly in Waterworks Scam
A German court has convicted four men for their roles in the so-called waterworks scam, a fraud scheme targeting elderly victims. The Mönchengladbach Regional Court handed down sentences ranging from nine months to five years after a trial involving fake utility workers and thefts across the region.
The gang carried out 13 fraudulent thefts between September 2023 and april 2025. Their method involved ringing doorbells, posing as water company employees, and showing fake IDs to gain entry. While one man distracted the homeowner—often an elderly person—another searched for and stole cash or valuables.
Police arrested the men, aged between 25 and 69, in april 2025. Three of them had already admitted their involvement during the investigation. The court found them guilty of commercial gang theft, aggravated theft, computer fraud, and bodily harm.
An additional group of accomplices had been sentenced in mid-January for their part in the scheme. One defendant in this latest trial was acquitted.
The convictions bring an end to a series of crimes that exploited elderly residents through deception. The sentences reflect the severity of the offences, which included repeated thefts and coordinated fraud over nearly two years.
