German court sides with Google Maps in Street View privacy lawsuit
A Berlin court has ruled in favour of Google Maps Street View after a German woman sued the company over images of her home. The woman argued that the service violated her property and privacy rights, but the court dismissed her claims. The decision marks a legal win for Google Maps, though experts warn future privacy disputes could still arise.
Google Maps Street View launched in Oberstaufen, Bavaria, in late 2010 before expanding to 20 major German cities. The service uses cameras mounted at a height of three metres to capture street-level images. Faces, licence plates, and homes are automatically blurred, and residents can request further obfuscation of their properties.
A woman from the region took legal action, claiming the images of her house were taken without permission and infringed on her rights. The Berlin court rejected her argument, stating that photographing buildings from public streets is lawful in Germany. The ruling clarified that property rights were not violated, though the case did not address privacy law directly.
The decision is final, with no further appeals possible. However, some German legal experts suggest that while this case is settled, Google Maps may still face individual lawsuits related to privacy concerns in the future.
The court’s ruling confirms that Google Maps Street View operates within German law when capturing images from public spaces. The company’s automatic blurring and opt-out system remains in place. Still, the possibility of future legal challenges over privacy issues has not been ruled out.
