German Defense Minister Vetoes Conscription Law Compromise

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, an SPD member, recently vetoed a compromise on the new military service law, halting an agreement between the SPD and the Union (CDU) on the introduction of conscription. The cancellation of the announcement came as a surprise, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz stating that the situation is not as dramatic as portrayed.

Pistorius defended his veto, expressing reservations about the compromise that were known beforehand. Despite this, Merz does not consider the trust relationship between them strained. The Chancellor is in close contact with Pistorius and other actors, discussing different positions internally. Merz has clarified that he will not be 'grading attitudes' regarding the dispute. Although Pistorius finds the situation less dramatic than portrayed, no damage has been done so far.

The dispute over the introduction of conscription in Germany continues, with Pistorius' veto halting the compromise. Despite the setback, Merz maintains a close dialogue with Pistorius and other actors, working towards a resolution. The situation remains under discussion, with no significant damage reported.
