German deputy leader questions Trump’s ‘unusual’ role in Ukraine peace talks

Steffen Bilger, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group’s first deputy floor leader, has spoken about the ongoing Ukraine peace talks. His comments follow recent statements from U.S. officials, including Foreign Minister Rubio, which have eased some of his concerns.

Bilger also described President Donald Trump’s role in the negotiations as 'quite unusual' and admitted surprise at America’s approach.

Bilger’s remarks come after U.S. politicians made public statements about the talks. Among them, Foreign Minister Rubio’s comments appeared to reassure the German lawmaker. Bilger had previously expressed unease over how the negotiations were unfolding.

A key figure in the discussions is Steve Witkoff, an American envoy. Russia has identified him as someone open to their interests in the 28-point peace plan. His involvement has added weight to the U.S. position in the talks between Washington and Moscow.

Bilger’s observation about Trump’s behaviour suggests a break from standard diplomatic practice. The deputy floor leader did not elaborate further but made it clear that the U.S. strategy had caught him off guard.

The negotiations continue with Witkoff playing a notable role in bridging U.S. and Russian positions. Bilger’s reaction highlights the shifting dynamics in the peace process. His relief at recent U.S. statements suggests a possible easing of tensions in the discussions.
