German Equestrian Federation bans investigative journalists from press event
Two investigative journalists were blocked from attending a press conference organised by the German Equestrian Federation (DESG). Hajo Seppelt and Jörg Mebus received a legally issued ban, preventing their entry. The move has sparked criticism from media organisations and press freedom advocates.
The incident unfolded when Seppelt and Mebus, known for their investigative work, were denied access to the event. The ban was formally delivered, though its exact justification remains unclear. In response, the Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS) and broadcaster ARD publicly condemned the decision, calling it a breach of journalistic ethics.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) later reinforced its stance on the matter. It described press freedom as a fundamental democratic principle. The organisation also reminded its member bodies, including the DESG, of their duty to uphold these values.
No official statements from the DESG or its parent body, the Deutsche Equestrian Federation (FN), have been verified regarding prior investigations or disputes with the journalists. The lack of transparency has left key questions unanswered.
The exclusion of Seppelt and Mebus has raised concerns about media access in German sports. Both the VDS and ARD have demanded a reversal of the ban. Meanwhile, the DOSB's position underscores the broader expectation that sports federations respect journalistic independence.
