German farmers demand fairer EU policies before pivotal 2024 elections

Farmers in the Lüneburger Heide region are pushing for clearer, more flexible rules ahead of the European elections. The local agricultural association, representing 4,000 members, has called on political parties to better support their needs. Their demands come after months of protests and recent changes to EU pesticide policies.

The Landwirtschaftsverband Lüneburger Heide has urged Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, the CDU, and Freie Wähler to prioritise farming interests in Brussels. Chairman Henrik Rump and managing director Henning Jensen criticised current policies for excessive bureaucracy and a lack of practical expertise. They argued that over-regulation and restricted business freedom are making farming unsustainable.

The association insists that new policies must respect farmers’ ability to choose what they grow. With elections approaching, they are pressing for a system that balances environmental goals with practical, on-the-ground needs. Their message is clear: without fairer rules, the future of farming in the region remains uncertain.
