Farm situation challenging at the start of Green Week - German farmers face collapse as prices plummet and costs soar at Green Week

Berlin’s annual Green Week has kicked off at a difficult time for German farmers. The event comes as the agricultural sector in Germany faces some of its toughest challenges in years. From collapsing prices to rising costs, producers are struggling across multiple industries.

Grain prices have hit their lowest point since the early 1980s. Pork now sells for just €1.45 per kilogram, a steep drop that has squeezed producers. Potatoes and sugar are also under heavy price pressure, adding to the strain.

The wine industry in Germany is facing its worst crisis in decades. Meanwhile, the food sector reported a strong 2024, with revenues climbing 4% to nearly €242 billion. Over half of the companies surveyed by the BVE described their profitability as satisfactory or better. Yet for farmers in Germany, conditions remain dire. The German Farmers’ Association (DBV) has labelled market prices as disastrous. Its president has urged policymakers to cut costs and provide urgent relief. Another hurdle is Germany’s minimum wage, which stands at twice the level of some EU competitors, further weakening the sector’s position.

The crisis spans crops, livestock, and wine, with no quick solutions in sight. Farmers are looking to Green Week for answers as they battle unsustainable prices and high expenses. The gap between struggling producers and a thriving food industry highlights the uneven pressures across the sector in Germany.
