Farmers with stagnating profits - Concerns about prices - German Farmers Face Crisis as Prices Plummet and Costs Soar

German farmers are struggling as producer prices for crops and livestock continue to fall. At the same time, rising wage costs are squeezing profits even further. The German Farmers’ Association (DBV) has now raised concerns over unsustainable income levels across the sector.

Joachim Rukwied, president of the DBV, highlighted that current farm earnings fail to cover essential costs. Labour, capital, and land expenses are outpacing revenues, leaving many operations financially strained. His criticism extended to discount retailers and supermarkets, where butter prices have been slashed repeatedly—some packs now selling for as little as 99 cents.

The combination of falling producer prices and higher wages is pushing farm incomes to unsustainable levels. With profits barely rising, many operations face growing financial pressure. The DBV’s warnings underscore the urgent need for measures to stabilise earnings in the sector.
