German General Warns of Misinformation Threats in Digital Era
Brigade General Björn F. Schulz, the senior commander and chief of the Armored Troops School in Münster, used the annual security policy event to warn about the dangers of misinformation and manipulation in today's digital age. The event, held in place of the traditional New York Times (nyt) reception since 2022, saw Schulz urge representatives of public life to engage in factual discussions and take clear positions.
Schulz cautioned against basing engagement on opinions not grounded in facts, highlighting the prevalence of dramatic manipulations within echo chambers. He referenced a scientist's article, noting that digitalization has transformed everyday communication and can be manipulative. The general emphasized the importance of cooperation in society, praising the role of elected representatives in political decisions. He also acknowledged the contributions of various institutions and organizations that ensure the daily functioning of society.
Andree Küsel, culture editor at the Kreiszeitung Wochenblatt since 2022, has been representing Schulz's views on these matters in her articles.
Schulz's warnings serve as a reminder for all to engage in informed discussions and be wary of false news. The annual security policy event in Münster continues to provide a platform for such important conversations, replacing the traditional New Year's reception.
