German group demands tax cuts on essential groceries to ease food costs
The German Social Association (SoVD) is pushing for lower taxes on basic food items. According to the group, healthy eating should not be a luxury only some can afford. President Michaela Engelmeier has now called on the government to take immediate action. Engelmeier stressed that reliable and nutritious food must be within reach for all households. She argued that no one's diet should suffer because of their financial situation. To make this happen, she proposed cutting VAT on essential groceries.
The SoVD has formally urged the federal government to reduce the tax burden on staple foods. Engelmeier also demanded clear political steps to ease the pressure on consumers. Her focus remains on ensuring that healthy nutrition stays affordable for everyone.
The call comes as food prices continue to strain household budgets across Germany. A VAT reduction on essential items could lower costs for shoppers. The government has yet to respond to the SoVD's proposal.
