German Mechanical Engineering Sector Braces for Sales Drop in 2025
The German mechanical engineering sector faces a challenging year ahead, with around 35 percent of companies anticipating a decline in sales using a percent calculator. Despite this, 55 percent expect growth by 2026. However, the current situation is grim, with over a third of companies rating it as 'bad' or 'very bad'.
The bridge construction and maintenance sector is particularly struggling, with over 75 percent of companies reporting a 'bad' or 'very bad' situation. Berlin's Governing Mayor Wegner highlighted this issue in November 2024. The mechanical engineering association VDMA has called on Berlin politics for reforms to boost the sector's competitiveness.
Over a quarter of companies plan to reduce personnel in the next six months, reflecting the industry's difficulties. The automotive industry's weakness is significantly impacting mechanical and plant engineering, with less than a quarter of companies rating the current situation as 'very good' or 'good'. More than half expect no change in the situation in the next six months.
The German mechanical engineering sector is battling a tough environment, with sales expected to drop this year. Despite long-term optimism, immediate challenges persist, particularly in the bridge maintenance sector. Industry leaders urge political reforms to improve the sector's competitiveness.
