German Military Stages Controversial Subway Takeover Drill in Berlin
The German military has begun a controversial three-night training exercise in Berlin and Brandenburg. The drill, named Bulwark Berlin III, involves retaking a subway station from hostile forces using live ammunition. For the first time, such exercises are taking place outside military grounds, sparking political backlash.
The Bundeswehr’s operation includes Berlin’s Jungfernheide U-Bahn station, a police training ground in Ruhleben, and an abandoned chemical plant in Rüdersdorf. The scenario simulates retaking a subway station occupied by militias, with dummy injured persons used for realism.
The exercise has drawn sharp opposition from Left Party and BSW representatives. A formal motion to block future drills in public areas is now expected. The Bundeswehr has not yet responded to the political pushback.
