Federal Research Minister Bär has 'no problem' with Indian costumes at Carnival - German Minister Defends Native American Carnival Costumes Amid Backlash
German Research Minister Anja Karliczek, also known as Minister Bär, has sparked a debate after expressing her views on cultural sensitivity during Carnival. She will be honoured by the Aachen Carnival Association in January with the Order Against Deadly Seriousness.
Minister Bär has no qualms about Germans dressing up as Native Americans for Carnival. She believes that Indigenous peoples are less concerned about such costumes than some German activists. However, she acknowledges that costumes glorifying war or evoking the Nazi era are off-limits.
The Order Against Deadly Seriousness, which Bär will receive in January, is a prestigious award given by the Aachen Carnival Association. Past recipients include German Chancellors Friedrich Merz, Helmut Schmidt, and Konrad Adenauer. The previous recipient before Bär in 2021 was Peter Stöger in 2018. Bär expressed her joy at receiving the award and her love for the carnival season.
Minister Bär's comments on cultural sensitivity during Carnival have sparked discussion. While she acknowledges certain costume restrictions, her views on Native American attire have been controversial. Despite this, she remains excited to receive the Order Against Deadly Seriousness from the Aachen Carnival Association in January.
