Current Hour in the Bundestag Requested: Greens Want to Debate Climate Policy - German Opposition Demands Stronger Climate Action Ahead of COP30 Debate
The Bundestag will host an opposition-led debate on climate policy this Thursday, titled 'No Weakening of Climate Protection—Federal Government Must Take the Lead in Climate Policy'. The Greens are pushing for Chancellor Friedrich Merz to commit firmly to climate protection measures.
Merz, who has been the Bundeskanzler since May 2025, attended a pre-COP summit in Belém, Brazil, where he pledged substantial financial support for the country's Tropical Forest Forever Fund (TFFF). The 30th UN Climate Conference (COP30) is currently underway in Belém, with over 190 countries participating and an expected attendance of around 50,000.
Greens spokesperson Irene Mihalic has criticized the coalition for scaling back support for renewable energy and reducing funding for international climate finance. She accused the government of not doing enough to combat climate change and urged Germany to take a clear lead in climate protection.
The upcoming debate in the Bundestag will provide an opportunity for the opposition to press the government on its climate policy. With the COP30 conference ongoing, the international spotlight is on Germany to demonstrate its commitment to climate action and leadership.
