German Pharmacists’ Association faces potential split over reform motion

Jörg Nolten has proposed a significant change within the German Pharmacists' Association (ABDA). He calls for greater professionalism at the top to reduce internal friction and expand the association's scope. Nolten argues that despite years of effort, no professional policy successes were achieved for pharmacists in 2025, with key demands still unmet despite being in the coalition agreement.

Nolten's motion proposes the withdrawal of the Apothekerkammer Westfalen-Lippe (Pharmacists' Chamber of Westphalia-Lippe) from the ABDA as of January 1, 2028. This decision is contingent and will be discussed at the chamber's assembly. Nolten cites inconsistent assessment of legal questions and fragmented negotiation processes as issues that could be improved by centralizing authority. He fears further failures under the current federal structure of the ABDA, which could trigger the withdrawal resolution.

Nolten also highlights insoluble conflicts of interest between state pharmacists’ associations and state chambers of pharmacists. His motion was updated based on discussions in the finance committee, as well as statements from Dr. Georg Kippels and Manfred Saar.

The Westphalia-Lippe Chamber of Pharmacists (AKWL) is set to leave the German Pharmacists’ Association (ABDA) if Nolten's motion is approved. The motion, which calls for the withdrawal, will be debated at the AKWL’s general assembly. Nolten's proposals aim to improve the ABDA's effectiveness and reduce internal conflicts.
