German pharmacists strike nationwide for fair pay and urgent reforms
Pharmacists across Germany are taking to the streets today in a coordinated protest for fairer pay and better working conditions. Many pharmacies have closed at noon, with owners and staff joining demonstrations in five major cities. The demands focus on higher fixed reimbursement rates and urgent structural reforms within the industry.
The protests, organised by regional associations like the Hessian Pharmacists' Association (HAV), have drawn strong participation. In Fulda, pharmacy owner Cordula Eichhorn praised the large turnout and media attention at the fifth rally there. Meanwhile, in Munich, Hans-Joachim Hofmann of Langenwand Pharmacy in Albstadt-Tailfingen travelled with 16 colleagues, citing staffing struggles as a key reason for joining.
Constanze Linz, owner of Leibniz Pharmacy in Hanover, shut her doors early to attend, stressing the need for a reimbursement rate increase. A Gotha pharmacist, now in her fourth year of protesting, demanded action on long-promised pay rises and deeper industry changes. Ina Lucas, president of Berlin's Chamber of Pharmacists, welcomed the solidarity and backed calls for quality healthcare funding. Silke Laubscher, an ABDA employee representative, urged Berlin to address rules on pharmacies without pharmacists and branch locations. Edward Mosch, a Vlotho pharmacist, supported ABDA President Gabriele Warken's rejection of past reforms, pushing for new solutions. A Greifswald pharmacy worker warned that underfunding was 'killing' pharmacies, demanding reimbursements rise from €9.50 to €11. Around 1,000 emergency pharmacies stayed open, but most others closed as staff joined central demonstrations.
The nationwide protests highlight growing frustration over stagnant reimbursements and unsustainable working conditions. With thousands participating, organisers hope the demonstrations will force policymakers to act. The focus now shifts to whether Berlin will respond to calls for higher funding and industry reforms.
