Why a Prosecutor Must Spend Years in Prison - German prosecutor jailed for leaking secrets to drug traffickers in bribery scandal

A prosecutor from Hanover has been jailed for eight years and six months after leaking sensitive law enforcement intelligence to drug traffickers. The court described his actions as a severe breach of trust that would take years to repair.

The prosecutor, once seen as a hardworking and respected colleague, handled 247 drug-related cases between May 2019 and February 2024. During this time, he passed encrypted chat logs and planned surveillance details to criminals through intermediaries, including a boxing coach.

He admitted to nine of the 14 charges against him, which led to a reduced sentence range of eight years and two months to eight years and nine months. The court ultimately imposed eight years and six months, noting that he showed limited genuine remorse despite expressing regret. The prosecutor accepted bribes of €5,000 per leak, effectively doubling his official salary. One of the drug traffickers he aided was later arrested in the United Arab Emirates for large-scale commercial drug trafficking. A boxing coach from Hanover, who acted as a middleman, received a suspended sentence of one year and ten months for aiding the bribery scheme. The court stressed that the prosecutor must now face the wider societal impact of his corruption.

The case has severely damaged public confidence in the justice system, according to the court. The prosecutor's actions will require years to undo, while investigations into unrelated corruption cases, such as the ongoing Landratsamt Miltenberg probe, continue separately.
