German raid exposes 33 Georgian workers in illegal poultry plant scheme
A major raid in Lower Saxony has uncovered 33 Georgian nationals working without valid residence permits. The operation targeted a Bulgarian company suspected of using sham contracts in poultry processing plants. Over 80 officers took part in the crackdown. The Financial Control Unit for Undeclared Work led the raid after suspicions arose over the company's hiring practices. Officers searched employee accommodations and a nearby farm, finding 24 people in housing and another 9 on the property.
The investigation follows earlier findings involving the same Bulgarian firm. In previous checks, authorities had already identified 40 other Georgian workers without proper permits. All 33 individuals now face criminal proceedings for illegal residence and have been issued departure orders. The case remains under investigation as authorities examine the company's employment records. Those found without permits must leave the country, while the Bulgarian firm could face further penalties. The operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat undeclared labour in the region.
