German Schools Turn Teacher Shortages Into Real-World Lessons
Schools in Germany face a growing problem: nearly one in ten classes gets cancelled each week due to staff shortages. This results in over a million lost teaching hours, leaving students without lessons. A Berlin-based initiative, LifeTeachUs, is now stepping in to turn these gaps into practical learning opportunities by bringing real-world experts into classrooms.
LifeTeachUs connects schools with volunteers called 'LifeTeachers' who fill in for cancelled lessons. The programme operates through an app that matches these instructors with over 200 partner schools across Germany. The highest number of participating schools are in North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin.
All volunteers must provide an extended police clearance certificate before teaching. Their sessions cover five key areas: life skills, career guidance, social issues, global topics, and health. For example, a tradesperson might explain their daily work, or a psychologist could share stress management techniques. The need for such a programme is clear. Around 60 percent of German students feel their school education leaves them poorly prepared for adult life. Many struggle with basic tasks like filing tax returns, earning professional certifications, or even refuelling a car. While the initiative helps, some warn that without oversight, it could attract ideologues pushing political agendas. Teachers are responsible for ensuring lessons stay focused on useful, neutral content. Despite its benefits, experts argue the long-term solution should be reducing cancelled classes altogether rather than relying on private initiatives to fill the gaps.
LifeTeachUs now has over 10,000 LifeTeachers registered nationwide. The programme offers students practical knowledge they might otherwise miss due to staff shortages. However, its success depends on maintaining quality control and keeping lessons relevant to everyday life.
