German SPD politician Carsten Träge dies suddenly at 52

Carsten Träge, a 52-year-old SPD politician and member of the Bundestag, has died unexpectedly. He collapsed while skiing in Austria on March 21, 2026, and passed away shortly afterward at Innsbruck University Hospital. Tributes have poured in from across Germany's political spectrum.

Träge began his political career in 2002, serving on Fürth's city council until 2013. That same year, he was first elected to the German Bundestag. By 2014, he had become chair of the SPD's Middle Franconia district, a role he held for nearly a decade.

In 2018, he took on the position of spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group's environmental policy. His work in this area led to his appointment as Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for the Environment in May 2025. Just months before his death, in 2023, he also became co-chair of the Bavarian SPD group in the Bundestag. News of his passing prompted an immediate response from Bundestag President Julia Klöckner, who ordered flags at parliamentary buildings to fly at half-mast. A public memorial service will take place on April 10 at 3:00 PM in St. Michael's Church in Fürth. Träge leaves behind his wife and two daughters.

No changes in the local SPD structure in Middle Franconia have been reported since Träge's death. With only eight days having passed, the focus remains on honouring his legacy and organising the upcoming memorial. The party has not yet announced any succession plans for his roles.
