German students honor reunification and a 35-year town partnership
A group from Lindengymnasium secondary school in Gummersbach recently travelled to Burg to mark two important milestones. The trip commemorated the 35th anniversary of Germany’s reunification and the long-standing partnership between Gummersbach and Burg. Students and staff explored historical sites while reflecting on the past.
The school organised the visit to strengthen ties with Burg, a town near Magdeburg. The two communities have been officially twinned since 1990, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. During their stay, the group met with members of Burg’s gymnastics club, Turnverein Burg e.V., where Hans Burg serves as a committee member. They also enjoyed a panoramic view of the town from its water tower.
The commemorative trip provided students with firsthand experiences of Germany’s history and its reunification. By visiting memorials, cultural sites, and meeting local residents, the group honoured the partnership between Gummersbach and Burg. The journey also reinforced the importance of remembering the past while celebrating unity.
