A recent survey shows that most German voters remain loyal to their chosen parties. Around two-thirds would cast their ballot the same way as in the 2025 federal election. However, a notable share of the electorate is still uncertain or open to change.

The findings come as the first major state election since 2025 took place in Baden-Württemberg last month. The results there revealed shifts in party support, with some gains and losses compared to previous years.

According to the poll, 66 percent of voters would stick with the same party if a federal election were held now. Loyalty runs particularly high among CDU/CSU supporters, with 80 percent saying they would back the Union again. Yet not all voters feel the same certainty: 18 percent remain undecided, while 16 percent would switch their vote.

The Baden-Württemberg state election on March 8, 2026, marked the first test of voter sentiment since the 2025 federal election. The Greens secured 30.2 percent of the vote, a slight drop from their 2021 result. The CDU improved to 29.7 percent, narrowing the gap. Meanwhile, the AfD nearly doubled its share, reaching 18.8 percent. The SPD fell sharply to 5.5 percent, barely clearing the threshold. Both the FDP and the Left failed to reach 5 percent, missing out on parliamentary representation. No other state elections have taken place since the 2025 federal vote. This makes Baden-Württemberg's results the first indication of how national political trends might be evolving at the regional level.

The survey and election outcomes suggest a mix of stability and change in German politics. While a strong majority of voters remain committed to their previous choices, a significant minority is either wavering or ready to shift allegiances. The Baden-Württemberg results also highlight growing support for the AfD and a decline for smaller parties, reshaping the state's political landscape.
