German War Graves Commission Launches Appeal for Donations
The German War Graves Commission, Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V., has launched an appeal for donations. Mayor Lennart Siefert of Lahnstein urges support to maintain war graves and foster peace and understanding.
The commission, caring for over 2.8 million war dead in 46 countries, maintains and erects graves abroad. Its work includes exhuming war dead, giving them a dignified final resting place, and maintaining their graves permanently. The commission also supports relatives, advises institutions, and engages in international activities.
The organization maintains over 830 war cemeteries worldwide, including prisoner-of-war cemeteries. It promotes educational and youth work, bringing young people together, and contributing to remembrance culture and international reconciliation. Donations can be made via phone, online, or bank transfer to Commerzbank Kassel, IBAN: DE23 5204 0021 0322 2999 00, BIC: COBADEFFXXX. The annual house and street collection is scheduled from October 18 to November 25, 2025.
