German Woman, 35, Convicted for Joining Islamic State, Gets Suspended Sentence
A German woman, Duygu D., 35, has been convicted for joining the Islamic State. Frankfurt am Main’s Higher Regional Court delivered the verdict, which is final as both parties waived their right to appeal.
Duygu D. joined the Islamic State in 2015, marrying a fellow member and living in territories controlled by the group until 2019. She supported her husband's activities as a fighter and raised their two children in these areas. In 2022, she was repatriated to Germany with her children.
The court sentenced her to two years in prison, suspended on probation. This decision took into account her lack of prior convictions, her remorse, and her rejection of IS ideology. Duygu D. confessed fully to her actions and cooperated as a witness in other investigations involving IS returnees. Despite her past, the court recognised her positive development since returning to Germany.
Duygu D. was convicted for her past actions but received a suspended sentence due to her clean record and positive development. Her children, whose names remain unspecified, were also brought back to Germany in 2022.
