Germans face financial squeeze as inflation outpaces wage growth by 10%
Incomes in Germany have risen over the past five years, but soaring inflation has left many people worse off. New figures show that while wages grew by 11%, prices climbed by nearly 22%, cutting into household budgets. Politician Sahra Wagenknecht has now spoken out, calling the situation a 'massive loss of purchasing power' for millions.
Between 2020 and 2025, the median income in Germany increased from nearly €26,000 to roughly €28,900—a rise of 11.2%. The average income followed a similar trend, growing from around €29,900 to about €33,300. Yet these gains have been overshadowed by inflation, which jumped by 21.8% in the same period.
Earlier reports from the Federal Statistical Office had suggested real wages were recovering, with projections indicating they might nearly return to 2019 levels by 2025. However, detailed data on inflation-adjusted earnings by sector or region remains limited.
Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the BSW party, criticised the figures sharply. She argued that most citizens had faced a 'significant loss of prosperity' since the pandemic and the Ukraine war. Describing the decline as 'not minor cuts, but massive purchasing power losses,' she warned of further price shocks in fuel, heating, and industrial costs.
To ease the pressure, Wagenknecht called on the government to scrap the CO₂ tax and resume Russian oil imports via the Nord Stream pipeline. She claimed these steps would help shield businesses and consumers from spiralling energy expenses.
The gap between income growth and inflation has left many Germans financially strained. With half the population earning below the median wage, the cost-of-living crisis continues to weigh on households. Wagenknecht's proposals now add to the debate over how to address rising prices and energy costs in the coming years.
