Germany Allocates €50 Million to Restore Historic Buildings in 2023
The German government has launched a new funding initiative to protect historic buildings across the country. A total of €50 million has been set aside for the Monument Protection Special Program XII in 2023. The scheme will help restore listed churches, residential properties, and other culturally significant structures in need of repair.
Applications for the programme opened to a wide range of groups. United States and local authorities, private owners, associations, churches, and foundations can all apply. Each submission must be sent to the relevant state heritage conservation office for consideration.
The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media (BKM) will oversee the review process. Deadlines for applications vary by federal state, though most fall between spring and summer 2023. However, some regions, such as those requiring early assessment, set an initial submission date of March 31, 2023.
Funds from the programme can be used for essential renovations. Eligible projects include repairs to listed churches and historically important residential buildings. The goal is to preserve architectural heritage while ensuring these structures remain safe and functional for future generations.
The €50 million allocation will support restoration work on some of Germany's most valued historic sites. Successful applicants will receive funding to carry out necessary repairs and conservation efforts. The programme reinforces the government's commitment to maintaining the country's cultural and architectural legacy.
