Germany and Cyprus Align on EU’s Future Ahead of 2026 Presidency

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hosted Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides at the Chancellery in Berlin. The meeting focused on Cyprus's upcoming EU Council Presidency in early 2026 and relations with Turkey. Merz praised Cyprus's careful and intense preparations for the presidency, describing their approach as highly constructive. The two leaders discussed potential avenues for deeper engagement between Turkey and the EU, acknowledging Cyprus's concerns. Christodoulides announced that the presidency would prioritize bolstering Europe's competitiveness and security. Merz, in turn, emphasized the need to finalize the EU's next multiannual financial framework as a key priority in 2026, stressing the importance of a modernized EU budget to ensure the EU's capability to act in the face of challenges. The meeting between Chancellor Merz and President Christodoulides highlighted the importance of Cyprus's EU Council Presidency and the need for a constructive dialogue with Turkey. The EU's future financial framework and its ability to address challenges were also key topics discussed.
