Germany and Singapore Seal New Defence Deals on Submarines and Aircraft

Germany and Singapore have strengthened their defence ties with new agreements on submarines and aircraft. During a visit by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, both nations signed deals that will expand their military cooperation. The moves include submarine maintenance plans and potential aircraft purchases.

Singapore has been expanding its submarine fleet since 2013, ordering six 218SG-class vessels from German manufacturer TKMS. Three have already arrived, with two in active service and the third recently delivered. Now, the country plans to acquire three more, bringing the total to six.

Earlier this year, Germany took delivery of its first Boeing P-8 maritime-surveillance aircraft, with seven more expected. Singapore is now considering a similar purchase, which would align its fleet with Germany's. This commonality could simplify training and logistics for both nations. A key part of the agreement involves a new submarine maintenance centre in Singapore. TKMS and ST Engineering's naval division will jointly run the facility. It will service Singapore's 218SG submarines and those operated by other regional allies built by TKMS. The centre ensures long-term operational readiness and supports strategic lifecycle maintenance. The memorandum of understanding was formalised during Pistorius' visit. Singapore already operates a large fleet of German-made Leopard 2 tanks, with estimates suggesting over 170 in service.

The deals will deepen defence collaboration between Germany and Singapore. The maintenance centre will support submarine operations for years, while potential P-8 purchases could enhance maritime surveillance. Both nations now share advanced military equipment, reinforcing their strategic partnership.
