Germany drops transit visas for Indian travellers changing flights

Germany has introduced a visa-free transit facility for Indian passport holders changing flights at its airports. The move follows discussions between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Merz’s recent visit to India. Both leaders highlighted the importance of stronger travel ties between the two nations.

Previously, Indian travellers transiting through German airports had to obtain a Schengen Airport Transit visa. This requirement applied even if they remained in the international transit zone without entering Germany. The new policy removes this step, simplifying journeys for thousands of passengers.

The decision was formally announced in a joint statement during Chancellor Merz’s trip. Prime Minister Modi welcomed the change, expressing gratitude for the initiative. Officials noted that the move would reduce paperwork, shorten waiting times, and encourage smoother travel. Both sides also emphasised the growing exchange of students, researchers, and professionals between India and Germany. The joint statement described close human connections as a cornerstone of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership. The visa-free transit facility is expected to further strengthen these ties.

The new rule means Indian travellers no longer need a separate transit visa when changing flights in Germany. The policy aims to ease travel and boost people-to-people links. It reflects ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation between the two countries.
