Germany Insists Ukraine Must Lead Any Peace Talks at G20 Summit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reaffirmed that Ukraine must play a central role in any peace negotiations. Speaking at the G20 summit in India, he stressed that no lasting resolution can be reached without Kyiv’s full agreement. The statement underscores Germany’s firm position on the conflict.

Merz made it clear that Ukraine’s consent is essential for a fair and effective peace process. He argued that excluding Kyiv would undermine both legitimacy and long-term stability. His remarks align with Germany’s broader commitment to a sustainable settlement in the region.

The European Union echoed this stance, with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President António Costa insisting that no decisions should be made without Ukraine’s involvement. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, along with German officials like Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Chancellery Chief Thorsten Frei, also emphasised the need for Ukraine and Europe to have a seat at the table. Meanwhile, eight Nordic and Baltic states pledged continued support for Ukraine after meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Reactions to Germany’s position have varied. Some nations welcomed the insistence on Ukraine’s inclusion, seeing it as a step toward fairness. Others, however, raised concerns that this approach could slow down negotiations. How countries respond to Germany’s stance will be key in shaping the peace process in the coming months.

Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s role in negotiations highlights its mediating influence in international conflicts. The country’s position could determine whether a solution emerges that balances Ukraine’s interests with broader global concerns. The outcome will depend on how other nations engage with this approach.
