He's ready: Klopp offers himself as an Olympic ambassador - Germany launches ambitious Olympic bid with star-studded support and four host cities
Germany is stepping up its efforts to host the Olympic Games, with strong backing from sports figures and the federal government. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has officially launched its bid, proposing four potential host regions. Prominent voices, including football manager Jürgen Klopp, have thrown their support behind the campaign.
The DOSB has named four bidding cities: Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr in North Rhine-Westphalia, Munich in Bavaria, Berlin, and Hamburg. The Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr proposal involves 17 neighbouring municipalities working together, while Munich recently secured 66% public approval in a local referendum.
Jürgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool FC, has publicly endorsed the bid. He believes hosting the Games would unite people and create widespread excitement. Klopp has also offered to take an active role in promoting Germany's candidacy.
Former Olympic swimmers Michael Groß and Franziska van Almsick have also voiced their support. Groß highlighted the importance of sports in engaging young people, especially in an era dominated by digital distractions. Van Almsick welcomed the idea, emphasising the positive impact the Games could have on society.
The federal government, represented by Christiane Schenderlein, has given its approval. Officials see the bid as an opportunity to drive social and infrastructural progress across the country.
With backing from athletes, coaches, and politicians, Germany's Olympic bid is gaining momentum. The DOSB will now focus on refining its proposals before the final decision. If successful, the Games could bring major sporting events back to the country for the first time in decades.
