Nationwide Raids Against Black Market Work in Construction Industry - Germany launches massive nationwide checks on construction sites for labor violations

Customs officers across Germany have begun large-scale inspections at construction sites this week. The operation involves over 3,200 officers targeting undeclared work and illegal employment. Initial findings will be announced on Wednesday.

The checks focus on ensuring workers are properly registered for social insurance and receiving at least the minimum wage. In construction, sector-specific pay rates apply, while other industries must meet the general minimum of €13.90 per hour. Officers are questioning staff, reviewing business records, and verifying foreign workers' permits.

Last year, German customs carried out 25,765 employer inspections nationwide. Of these, 6,121 cases were opened for suspected minimum wage violations—meaning roughly one in four inspections uncovered breaches. Authorities hope regular audits will reduce public tolerance of undeclared work and fraudulent benefit claims.

The nationwide operation aims to enforce labour laws and protect workers' rights. Results from this week's inspections will clarify how widespread violations remain. Further checks are expected if non-compliance persists.
