Germany May Donate Retired Sea Lynx Helicopters to Ukraine’s Navy
Germany is considering transferring its retired Sea Lynx naval helicopters to Ukraine. The move follows plans to replace the ageing fleet with newer NH-90 Sea Tiger models. Naval aviation commander Captain Broder Nielsen confirmed Ukraine as a possible recipient.
The Sea Lynx Mk 88A variant is a versatile maritime helicopter. It features a Seaspray surface-search radar, dipping sonar, and thermal imaging for autonomous missions. The aircraft can also carry modular weapons, including NATO-standard torpedoes or Sea Skua anti-ship missiles.
With a top speed exceeding 320 km/h, the helicopter has a combat radius of 200 to 250 km. Germany’s decision to phase out the Sea Lynx fleet opens the door for potential transfers. If completed, the helicopters would bolster Ukraine’s maritime aviation capabilities.
The Sea Lynx fleet remains operational but is being replaced by newer models in German service. A transfer to Ukraine would provide an experienced maritime asset with advanced sensors and armament options. The final decision on the transfer has not yet been announced.
