German Arms Industry to Be More Integrated with Civilian Companies - Germany merges civilian and military industries to boost defence innovation

Germany is pushing to strengthen its defence capabilities by bringing civilian and military industries closer together. The government's latest initiative, SVI Connect, aims to speed up arms production and secure supply chains for critical technologies. Ministers and industry leaders recently met to discuss how to make these changes happen faster.

The SVI Connect platform was launched in December 2023 to encourage collaboration between defence firms and civilian businesses. By March 2026, 47 German startups had already joined defence technology projects through the scheme. These companies, particularly those specialising in software and drones, are seen as vital for keeping up with rapid innovation.

Economy Minister Katharina Reiche and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius held talks with industry representatives to address bottlenecks in production. They outlined plans to simplify procurement, boost foreign trade, and fast-track security clearances for businesses. Pistorius stressed that reliable supply chains were essential for maintaining Germany's operational readiness.

Peter Leibinger, head of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), called the initiative a 'clear signal' that total defence was now a priority. The government has made it clear that its goal is not to threaten others but to ensure Germany cannot be threatened itself. New procurement methods are being introduced to keep pace with fast-moving sectors like drone development.

The push to integrate civilian and defence industries marks a shift in Germany's approach to national security. With startups playing an increasing role in areas like software and drones, the country is looking to reduce foreign dependencies and build a more resilient defence sector. The success of SVI Connect will depend on how quickly these changes can be put into practice.
