Germany nears social media ban for young users—can it work?

Germany is close to finalising a ban on social media for younger users. The move follows Austria's recent experiments, where students reported lower stress and better focus after cutting back on smartphones. Officials now face the challenge of enforcing age restrictions on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

Austria's nationwide Smartphone Experiment recently ended with positive results. Students who avoided social media and smartphones experienced improved well-being and less stress. Earlier trials in the country had already shown fewer negative thoughts and sharper concentration when phones were set aside.

Germany's proposed ban is now in its final stages. Only minor legal and technical adjustments remain before an official announcement, expected within days. However, enforcing the restrictions presents difficulties, as checking a user's age online is far harder than verifying it for alcohol or tobacco sales. One possible method involves a dedicated app, similar to Austria's *ID Austria* system. Yet, this remains under discussion, with no concrete plans for implementation. The ban must also balance fundamental rights, since social media plays a role in communication, education, and social interaction.

The German government's decision will soon be revealed, but enforcement remains uncertain. Age verification for apps like TikTok and Instagram still lacks a clear solution. The ban's success will depend on finding practical ways to apply the rules without infringing on users' rights.
